The PNG Strategy for Development of Statistics (PNGSDS) 2018-2027 is a Government ten (10) year overarching statistical framework to ensure comprehensive, effective and sustainable development of statistics in the country.

It is entitled: “Engineering the path to the development of our statistics

The Vision of the PNGSDS is to have a National Statistical System that conforms to set standards and best practices in the timely production of official statistics, to promote evidence-based planning and decision-making aligned with country’s development plans.

The Mission of the PNGSDS is to collect, process, analyse, coordinate and disseminate high quality official statistics and other statistical information within a well-structured NSS which supports economic growth, socio-economic development, democracy and good governance.
The PNGSDS came about as a result of the Government’s support towards the concept of the NSDS through NEC Decision No: 135/2010

The rationale for the PNGSDS includes:

  1. Statistics in the National Statistical System (NSS) is currently disintegrated, uncoordinated and poorly managed
  2. The need for program targeting, surveillance, monitoring and evaluation of the country’s policies and development plans/strategies (Policy M&E Framework)
  3. The assessment of the producer and user agencies in the National Statistical Systme which identified the challenges needed to address their data gaps and
  4. Provide indicators to analyze, monitor and evaluate the national government’s development plans, policies, goals and visions (sector policies, MTDP, Vision 2050, SDG)

The Strategy therefore focuses on improving the quality, the availability and use of statistical data to support evidence-based decision making and policy formulation.

The key purpose of the PNGSDS is primarily to coordinate and manage the sources of statistical information, ensure statistics/data quality, pool together statistics/data regularly into a National Data Centre (NDCC) that would be hosted at the Department of National Planning and Monitoring.

The Strategy also addresses the key challenges and constraints that prevents the National Statistical Systems from effectively producing the required quality official statistical data.
